Hayate no Gotoku!! 2nd Season Episode 17 – Mother Matters

July 29, 2009

Marias fear had come true... a lolicon was born...!

Maria's fear had come true... a lolicon was born...!

In Nagi’s desire to get a super sexy body, she teams up with the alien that landed on her room and helps her return to the spaceship. But as she and Hayate get a disagreement, she finds herself trapped in the spaceship on a light speed trip. Isumi regains her power through Hayate’s blood and sends Hayate to the ship to save Nagi before she gets sent light years away from Earth. After the whole space fiasco, Nagi reminisces about her late mother…

Expect some Hinagiku x Ayumu, a bit of Hayate x Kotetsu, Hayate x Nagi and… well, more people in towels.

Last time… Nagi and Ayumu escape the clutches of killers with Hayate and Ginka’s help. Ayumu and Hayate share a fun moment riding a bike shortly afterwards and Nagi, upon getting intoxicated after getting on the onsen, gets carried by Hayate. Getting frustrated why Hayate did not even have the slightest embarrassment in seeing her naked, Nagi shuts herself inside her room and wishes for an alien to come. And it does.

Continuing from last time, as Nagi checks up on the alien that fell on her room…

Mickey Mouses true form...

Mickey Mouse's true form...

Of course, like any normal person, she screamed. This alerts Hayate and knocks on her door. Nagi stares at the alien but it looks more frightened than her. She tells Hayate off, that it’s not a problem. Hayate leaves after that. Nagi makes sure that Hayate left by peeking through the door. The alien thanks Nagi, being discovered by intelligent life from another planet is big trouble… does that mean Nagi isn’t an intelligent life form? Anyway, the alien refers to itself as Maya. She explains that she was separated from her spaceship.

Meanwhile, at the onsen, Hinagiku enters and starts to think about how she would explain to Ayumu that she has fallen in love with Hayate, despite telling her that she would support her.

Your anticipated Hina service!

Your anticipated Hina service!

She remembers what Maria told her on the train. “Basically, she’s betraying her friend.” She gets struck by the statement again and attempts to get out of the onsen as the heat is starting to get to her. But as she makes her way out…

And you get a free Ayumu service in the mix!

And you get a free Ayumu service in the mix!

Back inside the room, Nagi promises Maya that she would help her retrieve her spaceship.

Rich people are scary. They are always plotting...

And then Maya says they have to do it as soon as possible and stands on the edge of the terrace.

At the onsen again, Hina decided to stay with Ayumu in the bath. Hina starts thinking again on talking with Ayumu about her dilemma. After mustering a bit of courage though, it gets all shattered into pieces by a surprise attack.

Touch...

Touch...

Then Ayumu starts commenting about how beautiful Hina’s skin is.

Because you cant, Ayumu is touching her for you.

Timotei~~

Ayumu wonders how Hina gets her hair so smooth and Hina says that she does no special treatment on it. Hina begins to gather up her spirit again but gets thrown off her game once again as Ayumu gets off the bath. She wants to scrub her skin for it to be as beautiful as Hina’s and Hina gets left alone on the hot water. Hina doesn’t stop her though. Hina thinks again, she has to tell Ayumu no matter what… but in the middle of her monologue, she finally gives in to the hot temperature.

Ayumu solo service~

Get out of there. Youll be the primary suspect!

Get out of there. You'll be the primary suspect!

Nagi asks Maya how she got separated from her spaceship and Maya explains that she was on a once-every-fifty-thousand-years onsen research but fell asleep and she accidentally hit the ejection button, which sent her not only out of spaceship but in orbit through Earth’s gravitational pull too. She then drops to the area where her spaceship landed. Nagi figures out that the strange potency of the onsen were due to Maya’s spaceship. Maya wonders why the spaceship did not land on the programmed landing site. Nagi then tells her that she knows a place where it could have landed.

In the dressing room of the onsen, Hina regains consciousness. Ayumu had been fanning her and making Hina use her lap as a pillow.

From a book, it does say that its easier to sleep on a persons lap.

Hina thanks her and Ayumu says it’s not a big deal. On a side note…

Thanks a lot, Ayumu. There goes the neighborhood...

Thanks a lot, Ayumu. There goes the neighborhood...

Ayumu comments on how soft and smooth Hina was. The now-super-embarrassed Hina comments that she won’t be able to marry anymore and Ayumu then suggests that she would take her instead. Hina then asks what about Hayate and Ayumu says she’ll also take him, making it polygamy. As Ayumu smiles at her, Hina tells herself that she shouldn’t lie anymore and gets up. As Hina starts to speak, calling her “Nishizawa-san”, Ayumu stops her by almost sealing her lips with her finger…

Receiving chocolates from girls... sooner or later, everyone knew this would happen.

Receiving chocolates from girls... sooner or later, everyone knew this would happen.

Hina again tries to tell Ayumu what she had wanted to say. She says it’s an important matter but before she could continue, Ayumu points out that they’re in a public area…

Where did all these people come from?!

Where did all these people come from?! And why are they all old?!

At Nagi’s side again, they have found Maya’s spaceship. And it was actually near the onsen that the Saginomiya family is using. Nagi was right on the mark. Nagi requests Maya to turn her into a super nice body woman but before she could finish, she spots Hayate entering the Saginomiya rest house.

What did you expect from a highly-female-populated character list?

What did you expect from a mostly-female-populated character list?

Nagi thinks Hayate may be cheating on her. But that can’t be! Everyone knows Hayate is super mero-mero mode for Nagi! …Right? Anyway, Maya heads off to get back on her spaceship but Nagi grabs her head and stops her. Nagi wants Maya to help her first before she could get back on her spaceship…

Part B. Inside the rest house, it seems Hayate had gone there to give his blood to Isumi, as he promised Ginka after helping him dispose of the killers last episode. Isumi thanks him but says she doesn’t need Hayate’s blood. Her powers would return eventually. Hayate protests a bit but his attempts get rejected. Isumi tells him to return to Nagi. Hayate changes to subject to how did Isumi lose her powers.

Vintage Hayate.

Vintage Hayate.

Isumi begins to tell of an old tale concerning her and a friend she met, eight years ago on a January. The friend was the daughter of her mother’s friend that she treated more like a sister. To avoid confusion, let’s say the friend is Nagi and the friend of Isumi’s mother is Yukariko… okay, so they ARE the characters that Isumi is referring to. In Nagi’s flashback of meeting Isumi for the first time back in season one, it seems they were at her mother’s hospital discharge party.

Isumi continues telling the story. March of the same year, Nagi stopped smiling. It seems Yukariko had passed away during that time. But Isumi was inexperienced at that time and lacked the skill. She performed human transmutation to resurrect Nagi’s mother but failed and just made Nagi cry even more… just kidding. Isumi did not specify what exactly she did that made Nagi cry but apparently, it was due to her lack of skill at that time.

It seems that event was connected somehow to her loss of power but Hayate doesn’t get it. The story was too vague anyway. Isumi tells him to go back to Nagi’s side again and he starts to heed her request and tries to leave. But before he can do it…

Boom, headshot!

Boom, headshot!

Ginka comes out of nowhere and wounds Hayate’s head. Ginka then tells Isumi to hurry up and drink his blood in order to get her power back. Isumi tells her that what they must hurry on is closing Hayate’s wound. She adds that this is not making her happy at all. Ginka runs away after being told by Isumi. Isumi gets up and goes off to get something to stop Hayate’s bleeding. As Hayate gets left alone inside the room… a surprise entry pops out!

Ta-da!

Ta-da!

Hayate screams and Nagi hears it. She pinpoints his location and slides open the paper door. She sees Kotetsu on top of Hayate.

We got yuri. Why not yaoi?

We got yuri. Why not yaoi?

Nagi becomes annoyed that Hayate sneaked out only to meet with Kotetsu. Nagi thinks the reason why he didn’t blush after seeing her naked is because Hayate… err… swings that way… Hayate reveals the reason why he didn’t react was because… of course, Nagi is still a little kid.

The aura of predictable rage!

The aura of predictable rage!

Nagi snaps after hearing Hayate call her a little kid and runs off but not before calling him an idiot. Maya catches up with Nagi and says that she wants to go home now. Nagi then says that she’ll come with Maya to space. Maya panics and tells her she can’t take her along, she’ll be in trouble. As Maya hovers above, she gets caught by Ginka’s chains. Ginka claims that she found the spaceship, therefore, it’s hers but before she could anything to Nagi, the spaceship lights up and begins to rise. Maya tells Nagi to get out while she still can.

Bad End

Bad End

But as Nagi tries to get off, the window closes on her. Nagi calls out to Hayate but the spaceship accelerates fast. Maya says her wings can’t keep up at that speed. Hayate catches up with Maya and asks her about the spaceship. Hayate tells her that he will give even his life just to bring Nagi back. Maya doesn’t know how… and to rescue comes Isumi!

What did you expect? Isumi biting his neck?

What did you expect? Isumi biting his neck?

It seems she recovers her power after receiving just a bit of Hayate’s blood.

Congratulations! You have leveled up!

Congratulations! You have leveled up!

And after the funky glow disappeared, the way to Nagi gets revealed. Isumi entrusts the safety of Nagi to Hayate and claiming that he is Nagi’s hero. Isumi says he has to bear with it as it will hurt a bit…

Ladies and gentlemen, please meet Gipson Jr.

Ladies and gentlemen, please meet Gipson Jr.

The homerun express goes off, with Hayate as the ball. Meanwhile, Nagi cries in front of the window of the spaceship. She pleads for the spaceship to stop. It seems when her mother passed away, they were in a fight, just like she and Hayate earlier so she doesn’t want that to be a goodbye. She calls out to Hayate one last time. And he responds!

Whered all the blood go?

Where'd all the blood go?

Nagi starts to cry again and Hayate hugs her tightly.

Aww~ how sweet~ Theres your Nagi x Hayate.

Aww~ how sweet~ There's your Nagi x Hayate.

Nagi struggles as Hayate’s grip gets tighter. She scolds him and tells him it’s not the time for that, they have to stop the ship before they really get sent to deep space. They both rush to the command center of the ship to find out why the ship had flew off and the suspect is…!

Do you even have a drivers license?

Ever heard of "Don't drink and drive"?

Hayate asks why a drunk Yukiji was there because last time when Hina explained her family trip to Shimoda, she said Yukiji was busy with work. It seems Yukiji got jealous of Hina enjoying a trip to Shimoda so she decided to hold supplementary classes there. Back at the changing room, we see Risa, Izumi and Miki.

Dont leave them out of the fanservice too!

Don't leave them out of the fanservice too!

Miki wonders where Yukiji went and Izumi says that she saw Yukiji running off to the spaceship and shouting “I wanna fly!”. Risa deals the final blow by saying Yukiji’s still stupid despite being in the Shimoda onsen.

The ship was now in space, slowly getting away from Earth. Hayate and Nagi gain control of the ship as Yukiji was knocked out, probably due to drinking too much. Both of them have no idea how to make the spaceship turn back and suddenly, Maya arrives and says that she can do it for them. Upon being asked how she got there…

We do too...

We do too...

Maya feels relieved that they were safe. Now she can be at ease… she gives her thanks and suddenly, the background shatters and light fills the area. Hayate finds himself alone in a bright area with nothing in it. He hears a voice, commending him on how he really comes to Nagi’s rescue when he’s needed. The voice tells him that Nagi’s pretty selfish and demanding but now all the voice can do is watch over Nagi. Hayate turns around to see where the voice was coming from and…

And Hayate finally reached heaven due to all the blood he lost...

And Hayate finally reached heaven due to all the blood he lost...

Hayate met Yukariko in his dream and thinks he saw a grown-up version of Nagi. Hayate suddenly wakes up and now he was lying on the grass with Nagi, covered by a shawl, using it as a blanket for them both. Hayate turns around and sees a grave behind them. The grave had the name “Yukariko Sanzenin”. After a while, Nagi had woken up and explains to Hayate about her mother.

Yukarikos grave and the shawl around Hayate and Nagi, apparently from Yukariko.

Yukariko's grave and the shawl around Hayate and Nagi, apparently from Yukariko.

It seems today was Yukariko’s death anniversary. Hayate then asks if that was her main objective on going to Shimoda and Nagi confirms it. Hayate wonders why the grave is in Shimoda and Nagi explains that it was because her parents’ honeymoon trip was in Shimoda and that her mother loved the place. Nagi continues her story. Her father died before she had been aware of her surroundings so her mother was everything for her. They promised that they would watch the stars in Shimoda after Yukariko gets better but her illness returned shortly after she was discharged from the hospital and because she couldn’t go with Nagi to Shimoda, they had a fight.

Her mother feels very sorry for not fulfilling her promise with Nagi and Nagi never knew that her mother would pass away right after that. Nagi wishes she could have apologized before Yukariko had left the world of the living. Hayate tries to comfort Nagi but suddenly, Sakuya comes in and whacks Nagi’s head with her harisen.

Sakuya gives us a special lesson on the right time and place on being sentimental.

Sakuya gives us a special lesson on the right time and place on being sentimental.

Suddenly, Maria, Ayumu, Hina and Isumi were behind. Maria says that they were all worried about the two.

They all sensed a disturbance in the force. The main heroine was getting an advantage.

They all sensed a disturbance in the force. The main heroine was getting an advantage.

Hina says that someone told her that they were there so she came to pick them up. Ayumu raised the question of who told her and it seems everyone was told to come there… yet they don’t know who.

Everyone does like glomping Hina even just randomly.

The trio pops out of nowhere and claims that who cares. They’re under a beautiful group of sakura trees. Kotetsu calls out to them. It seems the butlers were arranging the Hanami party event. Hatsuho walks up to them and says that before that, they should give flowers to Yukariko’s grave.

Rich peoples Hanami party.

Rich people's Hanami party.

The grave visit has now turned into a Hanami party but Nagi says her mother likes it lively anyway and she thinks her mother wanted to meet the people she interacts with. Hayate asks if Nagi wants to meet her mother again. Nagi claims that she has a truckload of money, she could buy anything that can be sold. But she knows that no matter how much money she stack up, her mother won’t return anymore. Though there’s one person who doesn’t understand that and a brief shot of Mikado Sanzenin can be seen, holding a pendant and looking at Yukariko’s portrait.

Hayate begins to wonder where the alien went and after that, we can see Isumi holding onto a piece of paper. Sakuya sees it and asks what it was. It was a picture that Nagi drew back a few years ago.

Hey, at least she colored it this time!

Hey, at least she colored it this time!

Nagi says that Maya had returned to her mother’s star. In her mind, she talks to her mother. She claims that now she has someone whom she loves with her. They often fight but they always enjoy the time they are together. She may not be able to join her mother soon but she wants her mother to continue watching over her, as the stars and sky.

To those who wonder where Yukiji went.

To those who wonder where Yukiji went.

After the Hanami party, Nagi walks around to find Hayate as he is needed by Maria. She finds him talking to her mother’s grave. Hayate asks Nagi’s mother’s grave if she could appear in Nagi’s dream as she regrets not being able to apologize before her mothe passed away.

Like a wedding vow?

As a butler? Or something else?

Nagi comes out of hiding and tells Hayate not to ask too much of the dead. She introduces Hayate to her mother… Nagi Sanzenin’s new butler, Ayasaki Hayate.

The End~

Good End~

The final episode of the Shimoda onsen arc goes off with a nice ending. I think I’m at a loss for words in this episode.

The first part’s Hina x Ayumu was… well, how do I put it…? Wow? We know suggestive details when we see/hear it but that was pretty much on a different level? Your milage may vary.

Apparently, Gipson Jr.’s mighty swing can also exchange loss of blood and wounded heads into just a small lump.

Gipson Jr. could be Charles Wells Gipson Jr., a former Major League Baseball outfielder. He helped the Seattle Mariners win the 2001 American League West Division, the New York Yankees with the 2003 American League Pennant and the Houston Astros with the 2005 National League Pennant. He is one of only seven players to have played at least 100 games.

Let’s not forget the Hayate x Nagi moments onboard. Those were pretty spectacular moments. The heartwarming moments in the Hanami party were good too. But that goes without saying. I’m just at a loss for words.

I’ve also started to read the Hayate no Gotoku manga recently. Now done with volume 2. I guess this could help with manga elements, though I have a lot to catch up on.

Also, I think I promised I’d do Umineko no Naku Koro ni but… after watching two episodes, I can’t put it into words anymore. The epicness? I guess it’s just too much for a beginner like me.

Anyway, this is the Bunny Chief, over and out!

EDIT: So Mr. “Gipson Jr.” is actually Gibson Jr. from MAJOR. They just switched the p for a b to avoid any copyright issues.

  1. A typical season is 26 episodes, although some popular series (ahem, DragonBall anyone ) seem to go on for ages.

  2. It’s actually “Gibson Jr” from the anime MAJOR. However, the head read “Gipson”, and sine J.C.Staff tends to slightly reword things which could construe a copyright infringement, we decided to stick with the “p” variant.

  3. I see. Well, I didn’t think it was him mainly because they referenced Rukawa just fine in the OVA. So I just looked for something else that might have been that guy. Anyways, thanks. XD

  4. what episode and season is this ???
