Kobato. 3 : Umbrella in the RainOctober 21, 2009
Last week Kobato collected her first “candy” by healing the heart of a boy from the nursery. Today Kobato has to prove Puppy-san she can keep up the good work. We’ll see lots of umbrellas and boyish tsundere voiced by none less than Marina Inoue (Kana from Minami-ke). For the fans of blonde twintails *pokes lazy prince* there’s some good stuff in here. The episode starts with Puppy-san and Kobato watching the rain from inside their tube at the playground. Kobato is in her usual genki state and wants to give her best shot even though it’s raining outside. As Kobato wants to get up, she forgets that she’s inside a tube and hits her head against the top. She trips and accidentally splatters Puppy-san with mud from a puddle.
Indeed, the opening.
And after the opening, Kobato reasons that being dirty isn’t a problem in the rain, since it’ll wash away the dirt. Puppy-san, however, doesn’t like being dirty nor wet and tries to take out an umbrella. On that moment, Sayaka appears and Puppy-san goes into doll mode.
A bit later, both walk through the city and Kobato asks where they are heading to. Sayaka answers that they’re going to Kobato’s new place. Kobato is surprised when they arrive at a large house. One of the rooms will be her room from now on. At Kobato’s new tube, the owner introduces herself to Kobato and tells her that if she has problems, she can always talk to her about them.
Sayaka leaves and Chitose says that Sayaka is still the same as always, caring about the others. Chitose asks Kobato when her luggage will arrive, but then Kobato quickly picks up her only suitcase and says that’s all she’s carrying with her. Chitose then asks if she has any bedsheets, which Kobato replies with a negative. The owner wants to show Kobato around next, Kobato happily follows her, but forgets about Puppy-san who’s left behind on the floor after being dropped.
Of course, it doesn’t last all too long before Kobato notices he’s gone from her pocket. She looks around for him and suddenly sees a terrifying sight…
After the angry dog routine, Puppy-san tells Kobato that the nursery is gonna open soon. Kobato immediately gets out and runs through the rain. She accidentally bumps into a girl while running. Once again Puppy-san drops out of Kobato’s bag, but this time the girl picks up the puppy and wipes it clean. The girl leaves and Puppy-san tells Kobato that the girl’s more considerate than her…making Kobato depressed.
At the nursery, Kobato is cleaning the windows when Sayaka asks her if she likes her new room. Kobato’s happy with her room saying that there’s a roof… Then the children walk over to Kobato too asking her to play. While Kobato keeps the children busy, Sayaka walks away and runs across Mr. Cool. Mr. Cool complains that Sayaka didn’t have to provide Kobato with an apartment. Sayaka waves his complains away by saying that everyone’s happy to have her over. Then Mr. Cool looks away and asks how many times she has been betrayed like that.
In the evening, Kobato is watching outside the window admiring the sky after the rain stopped. But when Kobato walked around the city later that evening, it’s already pouring rain again. Puppy-san tells Kobato to bear with it and walk home in the rain, he then quickly moves deeper in her bag to stay dry. Kobato says it’s unfair that he doesn’t get wet. A man who just exits the building where Kobato is taking cover at misinterpreted Kobato’s words and thinks they’re aimed at him instead of Puppy-san. That’s why he offers his umbrella to Kobato instead and says it’s okay to carry it with her. Kobato accepts and tells him she’ll return it for sure. They continue their trip around the city and arrive at the convenience store. Puppy-san says that’s a good place to find people and so they enter, after Kobato placed her umbrella in a rack.
A while later, Kobato exits with a depressed face saying she didn’t have luck this time. She then notices that her umbrella she borrowed from the man is gone. Kobato thinks that someone must’ve mistaken hers with theirs, but Puppy-san responds that it was most probably on purpose. Kobato is sad now, but then the girl from earlier exits the market and offers her own umbrella after Kobato tells her the story.
Suddenly, a boy passes by and calls out to the girl telling that if she snacks too much, she’ll get fat.
The girl blushes and then chases the boy while cursing. Kobato is left behind with the umbrella. Kobato reasons that there really are people who give up their umbrella even though they’ll get wet.
After the break, we start a new day. Kobato walks out of the Kobato shack and greets the landlady. She notices a mark from the tatami Kobato slept on, on Kobato’s face.
Kobato immediately runs off embarrassed. A bit later, Kobato is standing at the entrance of a school waiting for the girl from yesterday. When the girl arrived, Kobato handed over the umbrella she borrowed the day before. The girl accepted it back, but was surprised that Kobato knew where she went to school. Kobato explains that she asked the man, whom she also borrowed an umbrella from, where the girls wore a green school uniform. Kobato tells the girl that Puppy-san was very happy with the umbrella as well. Since she didn’t understand it, Kobato explains that Ioryogi is the name of the stuffed animal and then introduces herself to the girl, the girl does the same.
Then Mr. Obvious makes his appearance as well with another comment on Mutsumi’s looks. Kobato comforts the girl and says that she herself has a tatami mark on her face, Mutsumi isn’t really comforted by it though. Mutsumi then enters school and leaves. Kobato says that the boy is kind of a meanie just like Mr. Cool… which makes her realize she’s gonna be late for work again.
At the nursery…
Mr. Cool then leaves and makes place for Sayaka who’s worried about Kobato. She says she doesn’t have to worry about Mr. Cool since…
Later that day when the children went home, Sayaka notices that it’s gonna rain again. She asks if Mr. Cool wants to share his umbrella with Kobato since she didn’t bring hers. He answers that he still has work and that she should just borrow it alone since he doesn’t wanna ai-ai kasa (walking under an umbrella with 2). Kobato wonders what that is, then Puppy-san whispers that’s something that couples do.
While walking home, Kobato passes by the convenience store and notices that the man’s umbrella is brought back. As she picks it up, Mutsumi exits the store. Kobato asks if Mutsumi went shopping, which obviously, she did. Mutsumi offers one of her joyjoy bars to Kobato as she remembers Mr. Obvious’ quote from the day before. When Mutsumi is about to leave, she notices Mr. Obvious walking together with a girl while ai-ai kasa…ing. Matsumi is heartbroken and runs away.
Later that evening when Kobato is back at her shack, she wonders about what she can do to cheer up Mutsumi. Puppy-san shrugs and tells Kobato it’ll be a hard one, while munching the joyjoy candy. Suddenly, some girls call out to Kobato from outside in the hallway. Kobato opens up and 2 cute girls appear in front of her…
The two girls came over to bring Kobato a bunch of bedsheets and then, unfortunately leave again already. Puppy-san then reminds Kobato of her duty again while she was enjoying the soft bedsheets. Kobato agrees that she should help Mutsumi-chan and the following day, she waits at the school entrance.
When Mr. Obvious exits the school with some friends, Kobato jumps in front of them blocking their path. She asks him to have a chat with her about Mutsumi. A bit later, we get to see Mutsumi walking around being depressed. She suddenly hears Kobato’s voice and looks. She notices that Mr. Obvious and Kobato are talking together. Kobato asks the boy to ai-ai kasa with Mutsumi once too. Puppy-san is annoyed by the “too” in her sentence.
Mutsumi heard that part and runs over to them, then she asks to Kobato what the meaning of this is. Kobato explains that she wanted to help her because she was so sad the last time. She tells the boy that Mutsumi saw him walking together with another girl. Mutsumi disagrees, but she can’t give a valid reason why. Kobato says she just wanted to cheer Mutsumi up, she opens the umbrella and hands it to Mr. Obvious saying they should walk home together. The boy takes the umbrella and walks over to Mutsumi who starts acting tsundere. He then tells her that he isn’t dating the girl and that the girl just didn’t have an umbrella. They both start blushing, then Kobato gives the tsundere a little push to get forward.
As they both walk away, Kobato says to Puppy-san that Mutsumi still doesn’t look happy. Puppy-san answers that it’s fine and that Kobato should start watching anime with Rie Kugimiya.
Later, Kobato notices that there’re now 2 candies inside her bottle. Puppy-san tells her it’s because she cheered up Mutsumi. Suddenly 2 people walks across them at the other side of the river. One of them stops and looks back.
In the last scene, Puppy-san is about to give Kobato a good grade for her effort, but Kobato trips on the same moment, making Puppy-san fall into a puddle again… Result :
Cute episode again, not as convincing as the last one though. The fire blast joke is getting a bit overused, but it doesn’t really bother me that much. I like the new entries in this episode. The tsundere-ish Mutsumi voiced by Marina Inoune was good and the girls for Chobits are really adding a great level of moe into this one.
Storywise, I’m a bit disappointed that they’re just doing small arcs… I hope we’ll get a bigger one soon, which’ll add a lot more emotion to it. I’m sure this show could get a lot further with a bit more drama and a bigger story.
Anyway, that’s all for today!
