Bakemonogatari 1 : a tale of staplers

July 9, 2009
Just to show you what this show ISNT about...

Just to show you what this show ISN'T about...

As you all know already the summer season has started, one of the new series is this one. Production by Shaft and some of the best seiyuu star in this series, so yes this one will be a certain entry from now on. Bakemonogatari is somewhat simular to most Shaft shows ( Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, Maria Holic, Natsu no Arashi, …) with lots of “special effects” and I’m a fan of that style so this series caught my intrest pretty fast, just like the other series listed there. For more… read onA crossroad, a boy, a girl, the fanservice. You get the point… at least that’s what they wanna make you think…

crossroad ... boy ... girl ...

The story truely begins after the opening, which didn’t have any vocals, a boy is running up the stairs at school. He is rushing to meet someone at class when, suddenly, he notices a person falling down. He catches the girl, while his narrating voice tells us how he’d better not had done that. Once he safely caught the girl in both arms, he notices something strange. The girl weighs very light, almost weighing nothing at all. He noticed it, but didn’t tell the girl about it and that would soon seem like a bad mistake indeed.

Though you have to wonder how she fell from the center in his arms

We move straight on to the moment after the incident, the boy and the girl from the service shot are now together in a classroom discussing about class activities. Then we finally get to hear both their names, the boy’s called Araragi Koyomi, the girl Tsubasa Hanekawa. Tsubasa is the class president, she’s popular and has a good record with the teachers. He is the vice-chairman and always works together with her.

Araragi suddenly mentions that there’s a person called Senjougahara in their class.  Tsubasa asks him why he’s intrested in her, he replies by saying that he wonders if she’s going to participate in the next culture festival, since she has a weak body and is absent most of the time. Also that her name alone is quite intresting enough to wonder about. Tsubasa tells him that Senjougahara isn’t such a weird name and that “Hitagi”, her first name, is some kind of a construction-related term. After some seconds of silence, Tsubasa mumbles that it’s weird for him having an intrest in someone else.

Araragi wants to know more about the girl and asks Tsubasa if she knows anything more about her. Tsubasa tells him that she’s an honor student with good grades, also that they were in the same middle school. Suprisingly there she was a healthy student and a member of the track team, she was very sociable and gentle.

Her dad seems to be a high ranked business man and her family lives in a large mansion. Tsubasa tells him one more thing about her, that she now is a lot more pretty than she was before, since now she has a mysterious aura surrounding her.

Araragi then gets up saying he remembered something, he needs to call Oshino. He makes his leave but then suddenly he hears a voice behind his back asking him what he was talking about a second ago. As he turns around and …

Next up she'll mention she loses her memory after 13 hours

Why has this happend? Well, she explains to Araragi that in the time between middle and high school, she met a crab that took away her weight… She tells him that she only explains it because it would be annoying if he kept on sniffing around looking for the answer. She offers him a choice, whether to remain silent about it or to face the consequences of doing not.

with...scissors?

Araragi still in the slightly unpleasant pose agrees by nodding twice, her reaction…

theres the reply you had in mind!

there's the reply you had in mind!

She removes the razor blade but that, ofcourse, would seem all too sweet so she makes her leave with piercing his cheek using the stapler. He drops on his knees and Hitagi leaves saying he’d better ignore her from now on.

is he even able to?!

As he gets up he pulls out the metal pierced in his mouth (yes I’ll save for from the nightmares, still curious? just check this : http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii23/Saji-san/blog/snapshot20090709101755.jpg ) Tsubasa gets out of the classroom and asks why he is still there. Araragi replies …

oh you player~

oh you player~

Araragi then runs off downstairs and finds Senjogahara back there. She’s a bit suprised that he dares to face her again after what just happened, but since he’s there she doesn’t hold back and reveals some other equipment…

She declares a war at him, he tries to talk himself out of it by telling he might be able to help her. She doesn’t believe him at first and still goes on approaching him, that until he reveals his cheek to her and shows that there is no wound from the stapler just a while ago. Senjougahara drops her “weapons” and is stunned.

Some time later, both are on the streets heading towards the man called Oshino. Araragi tells Senjougahara about how he was able to turn back from a vampire to a normal human with the help from him, though he still has some side effects of immortality. Aside from that they start talking about some trivial stuff like Oshino’s name being moe, and Araragi wondering how she knows those kinds of terms.

Id preferm the term yandere in your case...

I'd preferm the term "yandere" in your case...

As they arrive at the place where Oshino lives, Araragi asks why she doesn’t keep a bag with her. She tells him that she places her textbook in a locker at school and keeps writing material all over her body, since a bag would only bother her in a fight. Araragi wants her to hand over her writing material, he says it would be bad to give Oshino a bad feeling when he’s his benefactor. Senjougahara thinks he led her into a trap, but after looking at him she eventually drops it…all.

The miracle of anime, shown in all of its glory once again

The enter the old building where Oshino lives and while they’re entering our lovely yandere tells Araragi that he should be thankful for … well …

oh how thoughtful of you

oh how thoughtful of you

She asks him if immortality is as handy as they say, he replies by saying it isn’t for him and that it’s only the fact that his wounds heal quicker than normal, aside from that he is a normal human. And just before they enter she gives him one final remark…

shouldnt he be the one making that remark?

shouldn't he be the one making that remark?

And after being mentioned that much, we finally get to meet the Oshino guy! He’s quite eccentric like Araragi mentioned once, living in a building that could break down at any given moment.

well hellow thar~

well hellow thar~

Together with him another character gets introduced, a silent child only sitting in a corner, her name Shinobu Oshino…

where is she anyway?!

where is she anyway?!

She tells Oshino that he might be someone that might be able to save her, Oshino immediatly replies that there’s no way to “save” her. “You saved yourself” is what he tells her, but Senjogahara doesn’t accept that as an answer, others have told her the same thing and all of them were crooks. Oshino laughs and tells her that they won’t get anywhere if she doesn’t tell him.

She eventually tells her story and Oshino explains that she met a weight crab. A legend from the mountains of Kyushu, people becoming weightless after meeting up with a weight crab. He tells her that usually rich, snobbish people encounter a weight crab, but he sees in her eyes that she isn’t that kind of person and is willing to help her…

is she really a woman?

Thoughts :

One word : lovely

I loved this episode, the style, the setting, the characters. This is one of the series I’ll follow for sure. Nothing much else to say about it yet, well maybe this for those who like Nozomu (Hiroshi Kamiya) you’ll get your portions of Itsoshiki-sensei voice parts. I could say the say about Tsubasa, Yui Horie but then withouth the “hauu” parts.

I’m looking forward to the second episode already.
