Hayate no Gotoku!! 2nd Season Episode 10 – Girl GiftsJune 8, 2009
This episode gives us bits of how Ayumu met Hayate, Hayate’s “ex-girlfriend”, gifts and Maria’s past. Expect lots of Ayumu in the first half and Maria in the second half.
The episode starts off with Ayumu, speeding downhill on a bike whose brakes were apparently busted. As she heads to a corner, her bike starts to take off the ground.
Luckily, a nice, dashing, young man appears to catch her before she meets her untimely end. Of course, that guy being Hayate, back when he wasn’t anyone’s butler. Ayumu wakes up from her dream. It was the first time she and Hayate met during April of last year.
In the Sanzenin Estate, Hayate asks Maria what girls these days would like to receive as a present.
When Maria begins to question Hayate’s intentions, he escapes by saying he still has some grocery to do. He heads for the shopping district. It seems he wants to give Hinagiku a present for her birthday after she took care of him for several days during the time he was sent away from the mansion. He tries looking for some women’s clothes but finds them too expensive for him to buy. He starts to lose confidence as he doesn’t know what girls like. “If only I had a female friend around my age”, he thought. (Yes, female friend, “onna tomodachi”, not girlfriend.)
And then he bumps into one: Ayumu. Hayate and Ayumu then both wonder why the other is at such a place. Hayate explains his intentions first and then thought that maybe Ayumu can help him find a suitable birthday gift. And then…
Hayate asks them what they were doing there but Miki bounces the question back at him. He explains once again that he wants to find a birthday gift for Hina. Miki senses something and…
Izumi then asks who the girl with Hayate is. Hayate introduces Ayumu to the trio and they introduce themselves back. In addition, Miki makes things more confusing.
Hayate then tells Ayumu that they’re just joking. Ayumu feels a bit out of place and tells Hayate that she’ll be going now since his friends are already there to help him instead. She pedals her bike away. Risa and Miki urges Hayate to follow Ayumu. Miki adds that if he doesn’t, someone might get hurt and immediately after that, Ayumu screams. She’s heading downhill with a busted brake again. She flies off the road again but gets saved by Hayate again, but in a different way this time.
But it turns into a good scene right after Hayate recovers and tells Ayumu to be careful and maintain her bike well.
In the meantime… Nagi is…
Hayate fixes Ayumu’s brakes. After that, Ayumu expresses her joy that Hayate still remembers the first time they met. Well, who wouldn’t? It’s quite a rare event to meet someone for the first time after saving them from falling off a steep road. The trio arrives and re-joins with Hayate and Ayumu and they continue to look for a present. Meanwhile, at Hakuou Academy, Hina was helping out Kaoru-sensei (the Gundam fanboy) in distributing hand-outs for the make-up exams. Kaoru-sensei starts looking for the trio who had also been invited for make-up exams but Hina tells him that they already left. Kaoru-sensei then asks Hina to look for them since he doesn’t want anyone to fail.
Hina makes her way to the shopping district to look for the trio. She hears them talking but instinctively hides after seeing Hayate and Ayumu were with them. She overhears the conversation about buying a present for her birthday.
Hayate suggests a cute stuffed toy and Hina seems to like it but he adds that it’s because Hina seems childish at times. Izumi suggests roses but Miki says Hina can be very clumsy and might hurt herself with the thorns. Risa suggests a game but Miki thinks Hina will definitely break it. Ayumu then tries suggesting clothes or accessories and Miki’s counter is…
After that, they split up: The trio and Hayate/Ayumu heads in separate ways. Miki now also wonders what to give Hina since it’s difficult to think something that she would like. She suggests that Hina might even like a soccer ball because Hina’s almost like a boy. Hina couldn’t take it anymore and shows herself to the trio.
Hina tells them she was there to tell the trio about the make-up exams and then asks Hayate’s whereabouts. Miki tells her that he’s the one looking for a gift but says it was probably just an excuse and that he’s on a date with Ayumu. Hina becomes curious and Miki senses this… and we proceed to Part B.
Hayate apologizes to Ayumu for taking her time to help him find a present but she tells him that it’s alright. After all, he saved her another disastrous bike ride and even fixed her bike. Ayumu begins to feel comfortable with the date-like atmosphere but then she submits to the nature of the show, that is, love-comedy and she thinks that something will definitely happen to suddenly shift the mood away. Her uneasiness is quickly eliminated by Hayate, who asks her if she wants ice cream, which is what normally should happen. Hayate then leads the conversation to what Ayumu wants. He says it was for the chocolates back in Valentine’s Day and begins to remember what happened, causing him to drop the ice cream he was holding onto. Both of them blush and Ayumu makes up an excuse and runs off. While that was happening… Hayate turns around to see that some people have already been listening…
Hayate begins to ask them what they were doing and becomes more surprised to find out Hina was among them. Hina tells him that it was the way to her house. Risa begins to doubt Hayate’s preference but Hayate says it’s not that he doesn’t like Ayumu. Ayumu had been taking care of Hayate back in their old school. It’s just that he thinks he doesn’t deserve to reciprocate to a girl’s feelings until he has a lot of money. He explains he was told that by his… please, prepare your hearts, EX-GIRLFRIEND!
They all want an explanation. I do too. So does everyone else. It seems that was way back in kindergarten… A little girl whom he refers to as “A-tan” is shown kicking him away after lecturing him about being able to support a girl before accepting their feelings.
Ayumu overhears this and she becomes relieved that it’s not because Hayate doesn’t like her.
Hayate returns to the mansion and finds Nagi in the kitchen room. She asks him where he went and he tells her that he was out to buy a present for Hina.
Nagi begins to ask Hayate why and he tells her that it’s because Hina takes care of him a lot on and off school. Nagi starts to become jealous but before she could probably kick him out of the mansion for good, Hayate hands Nagi a gift. It seems Hayate didn’t forget to give his ojousama something too. Hayate worries that because it’s cheap, she may not like it. Nagi then tells him that it’s the thought that always counts in gifts, things that she want and presents are different from each other.
Later, Maria praises Hayate for him being considerate, buying not only a present for Hina but also for Nagi. Hayate starts to ask Maria when her birthday is. She changes the subject and walks off to do some other duties. Hayate starts to wash the dishes and wonders if he did something wrong… again… that might have upset Maria.
As he begins to panic and think of what to do, a helping hand extends to him and suggests he go and beg for forgiveness while kneeling to Maria. None other than the priest spirit he met during the Sonia arc.
Hayate then runs off to find Maria and apologize. In one of the doors, we get our weekly dose of Tama.
He then hears a familiar voice, screaming. A door opens and Maria jumps onto Hayate.
It seems she was afraid of something and Hayate sees…
After disposing of Maria’s one true weakness, they both start apologizing. Maria tells Hayate not to apologize anymore and begins to tell her story.
It seems Maria was abandoned by her parents while she was a baby. She doesn’t know her real birthday, her real name nor her parents’ faces. December 24 was set to be her birthday. Maria begins to sob and says that thanks to Hayate, she remembered her painful past. Hayate panics again but it seems Maria was just teasing him. She turns around to see…
It seems Hayate also bought a gift for Maria. Maria says it’s the first time Hayate gave her something so she’ll take care of it. Hayate then promises that he will give Maria an even better gift on Christmas Eve.
The next day, Nagi and Maria inspect their gifts and…
The episode ends there.
A very lovely episode. I don’t really like Ayumu-centered episodes much but this one was really funny. Hayate no Gotoku! is truly one of the best comedy anime out there.
I wonder if we’ll be seeing that new character anytime soon. Anyway, the part with Maria was nice too. It seems she shares a bit of the same history as Hayate, but not as much as Hina’s.
This episode made me laugh even after watching it twice. A very good one.
Next time, Hina’s turn again. It’s her birthday bash!
And for those who don’t know, the Hayate no Gotoku!! 2nd Season ED Single is out: “Honjitsu, Mankai Watashi-Iro!” that features Shizuka Itou, Katsura Hinagiku’s seiyuu.
